Abstract

At ambient pressure the solubility of magnesium in iron is very limited (of the order of0.025 at.% in the liquid state), and vice versa. In a series of experiments using thepiston–cylinder and multi-anvil apparatus at pressures up to 20 GPa and temperatures up to2000 °C, we found an increase in the solid solubility of magnesium in iron up to 4 at.% Mg. Thesolution of magnesium in the bcc-structured Fe-based alloy increases the lattice parameterby approximately 2.4% with respect to that of pure iron.
