Abstract

At 0500 h on Feb 24, 2022, Russian missiles and airstrikes began to bombard Ukraine followed by a full-scale ground invasion of the country by Russian troops. Irina Pinchuk, Director of the Institute of Psychiatry of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kyiv, Ukraine, and Vice-President of the Ukrainian Psychiatric Association describes her experience of some of the fear and chaos that ensued. “My husband woke me up and told me about the attack on Ukraine. On that day, I was supposed to be teaching medical students undertaking a psychiatry programme; however, that day we stayed at home and my university administration contacted all personnel online, advising us to stop teaching for some days.
