Abstract

This chapter investigates Iran’s healthcare system and health policies in the context of social policy. It identifies five policy periods starting with the adoption of a primary healthcare model in the 1980s and culminating in the implementation of the Health System Transformation Plan after 2014. During this period, health indicators have significantly improved. Furthermore, government policy has brought around nine-tenths of the population under insurance coverage. Iran’s health sector is nevertheless faced with several direct and indirect challenges. Inequality in access to health services is still high, while providing universal health coverage with financial protection remains a major challenge.
