Abstract

A rapid method for the separation and determination of food coal-tar dyes (FD) was developed by the use of ion-pair (tetrabutylammonium phosphate: TBAP) high performance liquid chromatography under the following conditions: column, Radial-Pak cartridge C/18, 5μm (8mm i. d.×100mm) with a Z-Module; mobile phase, water containing 0.005M TBAP (A) and methyl alcohol (B); gradient program, A:B=51:49→A:B=0:100/4min, curve #8; flow rate, 5ml/min; detection, UV at 254nm. The separation time for 11 species of FD (Amaranth, New Coccine, Phloxine, Rose Bengal, Acid Red, Tartrazine, Sunset Yellow FCF, Fast Green FCF, Brilliant Blue FCF and Indigo Carmine) was within 5 minutes.Twenty-seven commercial foods (soft drinks, 16; pickles, 6; others, 5) were analyzed by using this method, and about 18mg of New Coccine was detected in canned soft drink No. 1 (200ml).
