Abstract

Electron impact ionization is-besides photon and ion impact ionization-the major ionization mechanism in natural and laboratory plasmas. Quantitative information on the kinetics of electron impact ionization of atoms, molecules and clusters (i.e. ionization cross sections) is therefore of the utmost importance for the understanding of this state of matter. Knowledge concerning experimental and theoretical determination of ionization cross functions is summarized.
