Abstract

A microwave-assisted extraction method with ionic liquids was developed for extraction of organochlorine pesticides from soil. Three different ionic liquids were investigated, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was selected as the extractant. The extracts were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The temperature, microwave power, extraction time, and liquid-to-solid ratio for the microwave extraction were optimized by single factor and orthogonal experiments. The optimized conditions for extraction of the target compounds were as follows: extraction temperature, 70°C; extraction power, 400 W; extraction time, 10 min; and liquid-to-solid ratio, 5 mL g−1. With the optimized method, recoveries for standards ranged from 72.6–99.2% and the relative standard deviations were less than 10.2%. Ultrasonic extraction was performed for comparison, and the microwave-assisted extraction was more efficient and faster than the ultrasonic extraction. The proposed extraction technique is an environmentally friendly and rapid alternative to current extraction protocols for organochlorine pesticides in soil.
