Abstract

Summary Chemical analyses reveal some important differences in the quantities of K, Na and especially phosphorus in the tissues of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis and Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy. Injection of air bladders of Ascophyllum nodosum with radioisotopes 32 P- 24 Na- 86 Rb(K)- 99 Mo showed by autoradiographic method or Geiger-Muller counter, easy transfer of these ions to Polysiphonia and other algae ( Fucus serratus and Cladophora sericea ). However, low temperature (1° C) does not stop the ion transfer, so that the importance of the metabolism of these transfers cannot be given.
