Abstract

Blends of zinc salts of maleic anhydride-grafted EPDM rubber and carboxylated nitrile rubber behave as ionic elastomers. Measurement of physical properties suggest that the blend is compatible. It is proposed that the compatibility arises presumably due to formation of interfacial ionic aggregates. Dynamic mechanical and infrared spectroscopic studies reveal that the ionic aggregates can be solvated by ammonia. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 153–160, 1998
