Abstract
Historically, the complexity of the issues that surround the care of mentally retarded individuals has created challenging questions that have confounded public opinions and reactions, the judicial system, and professionals in the medical and scientific community. To further understand the needs and challenges of those who provide services to this group, the basic assumptions and cases relevant to the issue of involuntary sterilization deserve revisiting. This article explores the lessons learned, and how important awareness of these lessons can be in ensuring that the values of individual worth, dignity, and self-determination remain at the forefront of all professional practice.
