Abstract
After several decades of R&D, the thin film batteries using ORNL’s Lipon glassy electrolyte is still a promising technology for consumer electronics. These batteries also serve as model systems for other solid-state battery efforts, as the thin film batteries demonstrate exceptional stability with extended cycling and wide ranges of voltage and temperature. In light of recent thermodynamic analysis [1], we need to ask - Are we cheating thermodynamics? This presentation will briefly review the early work on Lipon-based batteries leading into recent efforts to advance the understanding of Lipon properties. Results for stability of Lipon with high voltage cathodes and Li metal will be highlighted. [1] William D. Richards, Lincoln J.
