Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are one of the most popular energy storage devices due to their high power and energy densities, rechargeability and long service life. LIBs have become the most promising energy storage option for EVs with the advantages in long cycle life and high energy density compared to other secondary batteries. Nevertheless, several challenges need be addressed in order to realize EVs with lower cost, longer driving range, shorter charge time, better safety and longevity. In this presentation, we will discuss a solvent-free manufacturing method aiming at reducing manufacturing cost. The solvent-free manufactured anode and cathode electrodes are investigated by comparing with its counterparts manufactured by conventional slurry casting in terms of bonding strength, electronical properties, and electrochemical performances. The presentation will also discuss fundamental discoveries and engineering challenges associated with solvent-free manufacturing of Li-ion batteries including material handling, calendering, manufacturing scalability and processing-structure-property relationships.
