Abstract

Challenges to the HPV vaccination programme surfaced at the outset, with considerable misinformation and opposition to HPV vaccination. Awareness building and an educational strategy did not effectively address the misconceptions. When the 2012 to 2013 HPV vaccination was incorporated into the National Immunization Programme targeting 12-year old girls in grade eight (N=8000), lessons learnt from the initial pilot programme were applied to an awareness campaign. This latter portion of programme achieved a 3rd dose coverage of 94%.
