Abstract

Objective To understand the status and distribution characteristics of soil transmitted nema tode disease at Qinliu County,and to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control strategies and measures.Methods A random sample of Changxiao,Laifang,Longjin,Linyu and Songkou town,in Qingliu County,Fujian Province was choosed as the spots for the survey.Feces were collected and detected for the eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides,Trichuris trichiura,and hookworm,using modified Kato-Katz thick smear method.The database was established with Microsoft Excel 2003 software.The data were analyzed with SPSS19.0 software.The difference was statistically significant when P<0.05.Results A total of 76 people was found infected with soil transmitted nematodes in 1 000 people investigated,the infection rate was 7.60%.The infection rates of hookworm,Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris were 7.60%,0 and 0 respectively.The hookworm eggs per gram feces(EPG) in the infected individuals was up to 320 while the least was 2,all at a mild infection level.The highest infection rate was 14.08% (20/142) at Changxiao Town; the lowest was 4.59% (10/218) at Linyu Town.The infection rate had no significant difference between male and female (x2=0.043,P>0.05).The infection rates were different with statistical significance among different age groups,education groups and occupation groups (x2=44.680,29.223,27.672,P<0.01).Conclusion The infection of soil-transmitted nematodes is at a low level in Qingliu County.The elderly,the people with low education level and the people engaged in agricultural production are the key population of infection of soil-transmitted nematodes.
