Abstract

The structural light metal AE44 with the composition Mg-4wt%Al-4wt%RE (RE: rare earth) has a high specific creep resistance which makes it a promising alloy for many applications. In this study, the effect of trace Si addition on the microstructure of cast AE44 alloy is investigated. The RE elements present in the AE44 were varied using La, Ce, and a mixture of La and Ce at different ratios. It was found that 0.1% Si modified the La-containing intermetallics in the Mg-4Al-4La system. Thermo-Calc analysis revealed a La-Si phase that was stable in the melt with an almost identical d-spacing to Al53La22 and thus is hypothesised to be seeding the nucleation of Al-La intermetallics.KeywordsMagnesiumMorphology modificationAE44CastingMicrostructureIMC
