Abstract

Wave-transmitting Si3N4 ceramics present good high temperature resistance and wave permeability, widely applied in the aerospace field. The ceramics can be machined by milling machining. But lower fracture toughness is still their essential characteristics, and edge chipping is inevitable. There are no valid evaluation methods and evaluation parameters for edge chipping. In this paper the fractal theory has been introduced to analyze edge chipping profile, and the parameter called fractal root mean square deviation has been proposed for evaluation. It possesses double characteristics of absolute measurement and multi-scale. Edge chipping section morphology generating method has been proposed based on fractal interpolation theory, and the edge chipping volume has been obtained. Meanwhile, the relationship between cutting depth and edge chipping was prepared according to experiments. The results could be implemented in practice to get higher quality surface.
