Abstract

In the present study, the surface composite was fabricated via friction stir processing on AA5083 using mixture of Fe powder, SiC, Sn and Mn powder. Microstructural characterization with the help of bead geometry and micro-hardness analysis were performed to study the various zones of the processed samples. L4 orthogonal array from the Taguchi method is used for analysis. Improvement in microstructure and hardness is achieved at a rotational speed of 900 rpm, traverse speed of 50 mm/min and 24 mm shoulder diameter. Grain size is varying from one zone to another and enhanced properties are obtained because of grain refinement after friction stir processing.
