Abstract

The transverse magnetic field (TMF) can drive the arc to rotate, to reduce the erosion of contact. In this article, TMF contacts of six commonly used materials (CuCr10, CuCr30, CuCr50, WCu10, WCu30, and CuW-WC) are investigated by experiments at the current of 5, 10, and 15 kA. Experimental results show that the contact material has a significant impact on the arc, the arc on CuCr materials rotates, and shows noisy voltage, while the arc on WCu hardly rotates and exhibits a stable arc voltage because of staying in the diffuse mode. Though the erosion of CuCr contacts is more severe than WCu contacts, the results of breaking operations also indicate that CuCr contacts outperform WCu contacts, where CuCr10 contact has a lower breaking capacity than CuCr30 and CuCr50. Moreover, the steel support disk of the interrupter contacts plays a role in the reignition of the arc after a half-cycle of current which is obvious from the erosion of the disk and from records of the arc appearance.
