Abstract
Abstract Sudden heating of the cracked edge of a semi-infinite plate produces transient thermal stresses and dynamic stress intensity factors at the tip of a crack. The maximum values of the stress intensity factors, KI and KII occur a short time after the initiation of the transient and depend on the inclination of the crack with respect to the heated edge. The critical inclination of edge cracks of uniform length that produced the maximum mode I thermal stress intensity factor was found experimentally through digital image analysis of transient photoelastic images of the dynamic stress field. Williams' equations were used to compute stress intensity factors from the stress field data.
