Abstract

AbstractThe thermal degradation of adsorption layers of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) on the surface of Schott 8330 and Schott 8512 glass was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13C magic angle spinning solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with cross‐polarization (CP‐MAS NMR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). In contrast to the neat polymer, dehydrogenation of PAN on a glass surface takes place in an inert atmosphere. In the case of Schott 8512 glass (3% FeO) under oxidizing conditions we observed a complexation of nitrile groups to surface species.
