Abstract

Spectroturbidimetric titration (STT) has been used to investigate the WPD of poly-α-methylstyrene specimens synthesized under identical conditions with the use of anionic catalysts having various structures. The calculation of the solubility curves for the polymer has been made taking account of the degree of dispersion and the relative refractive index of the particles of the precipitated polymer. It has been found that the dimensions of the dispersed phase particles do not remain constant during titration of the system poly-α-methylstyrene-cyclohexane-octanol. Direct comparison of the solubility curves with the turbidity curves of the systems has shown that the traditional variant of the method of turbidimetric titration is not suitable to assess the MWD of the specimens investigated. It has been established that the bimodal MWD (according to the STT data and the data from fractional precipitation) of the polymer formed during the polymerization of α-methylstyrene with α-naphthyl-sodium and n-butyllithium cannot be explained in terms of a “stepwise” mechanism of polymerization.
