Abstract

The 39K(p, α o) 36Ar reaction has been investigated in the energy region E p = 1.75–3.23 MeV; 52 resonances have been observed. Resonance and excitation energies, yields, J π values and formation parameters have been determined, the latter two from angular distribution measurements. A δE- E counter telescope system has been used to reduce the background arising from proton pile-up. The yield of the 39K(p, p 0) 39K reaction has been measured simultaneously with the ( p, α 0) yield; 25 (p, p 0) resonances could be analysed in the E p = 1.75–3.23 MeV region. Resonance and excitation energies, yields, widths, J π values and orbital angular momenta have been determined. In the energy region E p = 1.03–1.75 MeV the (p, p 0) reaction has been measured simultaneously with the yield of the 39K(p, γ) 40Ca reaction. The resonances at E p = 1103, 1130, 1153, 1238, 1306 and 1307 keV appear in both reactions. Some of the possible J π values, obtained from the (p, p 0) analysis, could be excluded with the help of the known γ-decay. A comparison has been made with data obtained from a study of delayed proton emission following the positon decay of 40Sc and with data from the 39K(d, n) 40Ca reaction. A number of resonances can be explained as the analogues of known 40K levels.
