Abstract
The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system plays a key role in 4G communication systems due to its ability to mitigate the frequency selective fading in a multipath channel. Channel fading causes Intersymbol Interference (ISI) and Intercarrier Interference (ICI) because of delay spread effect. These problems can be reduced by correlating the cyclic prefix with the OFDM symbol. This paper analyzes the OFDM performance with and without cyclic prefix of various lengths by considering the Bit Error Rate (BER) as performance metric. Results indicate that for an optimum cyclic prefix length (FFT length = 128 and cyclic prefix size = 16), the BPSK modulation technique is providing better BER performance when compared to other modulation techniques such as QPSK, 8PSK, 8QAM, 16QAM, 32QAM, and 256QAM.
