Abstract

Adsorption experiments of multivalent metal cations are carried out to determine the ion binding capacity of metal ion free carboxymethyl cellulose gel beads. These gel beads can be prepared by a simple ion exchange process. They possess a high adsorption capacity, e.g., the amount of adsorbed Ni 2+ ions reaches up to 0.32 mmol/g. The rate of adsorption is very high and adsorption of about 90% of total binding capacity is accomplished within 1h.
