Abstract

The investigation of the mixture formation and combustion in internal-combustion engines with aided and unaided ignition is of great interest in relation to the diesel engine and the hybrid engine. Cold starting, mean effective pressure, and smoke are influenced by mixture strength and other parameters. Additional problems arise with film vaporization from the combustion-chamber wall. High-speed photography, spectral analysis, pressure measurements, and gas analysis are some of the methods used to investigate the process of mixture formation and combustion. Using these methods, the mixture distribution, ignition, and flame propagation are investigated for aided and unaided ignition. Part of this experimental work was carried out by K. Feierlein and A.
