Abstract
Compacted bentonite is used as engineered barriers in contaminate site. The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of a barrier thickness and bentonite percentage to minimize groundwater pollution. Groundwater model is constructed to simulate solute transport. In order to control the migration of toxic, a compacted bentonite barriers are proposed with different thicknesses such as 1.5, 2 and 2.5 cm and different bentonite percentages (20, 35 and 50%). According to the experimental results, it found that the hydraulic conductivity decreases with the increase of bentonite percentage and bentonite percentages varies between (20–50) % seem to be suitable for constructing hydraulic barriers taking into consideration that barrier thickness is an important parameter in such cases. Results show that removal efficiency reaches about 61.8% in experimental model. Numerical modelling affirmed an acceptable coincidence with experimental results and it can be used successfully to simulate such phenomena.
