Abstract

Objective In order to provide references for humanities education, the empathy ability of new nurses and the influencing factors were investigated by the method of the combinition quantitative and qualitative. Methods The convenient sampling method was used to 92 new hired nurses in a three-grade class-A general hospital in 2015.The Chinese version of Jefferson empathy scale was used to investigate the present situation before the pre-service training, and 8 nurses among them were given the individual in-depth interviews. Results The empathy ability of new nurses was at a medium level, which was (3.41±0.07)points, and view-picking was a weak point, which was (3.21±0.09) points.The factors affecting the empathy ability of new nurses included three aspects: the gender, willness to choose nursing voluntarily or not and the fact of graduated university with humanities courses or not. Conclusion The empathy ability of new nurses which was affected by various factors was at the medium level overall, showing that the nursing colleges and teaching hospitals should cultivate targeted empathy ability of the nursing students, among which, the male nurse and the ones lacking of professional interest were the key cultivating objects.
