Abstract

Groundwater is a resource of strategic importance. The GIS techniques combined with the principles of the method POSH (Pollutant Origin, Surcharge Hydraulically), were used in order to investigate the potential inclusion of contaminant loads, for agriculture, in unconfined aquifer in the high stretch of basin Paraguaçu, state of Bahia. As a result we obtained the following classes: (a) areas with high potential for contamination, to intensive commercial culture, (b) areas with low potential for contamination, focused on traditional culture, and (c) areas with negligible potential for contamination for agriculture, because they correspond to other uses and coverages.
