Abstract

Pd layers of thickness from 0.5 to 10 monolayers have been evaporated onto Al(111). The evolution of the empty Pd states with layer thickness has been studied by k-resolved inverse photoemission spectroscopy. Empty Pd4d states at 0.25 eV above E F and a dispersing sp band are found only at coverages well above the monolayer. This corroborates the ARUPS result of an atomic-like 4d 105s 0 configuration of the Pd monolayer.
