Abstract

The unoccupied density of states of α-plutonium metal, plutonium sesquioxide (α-Pu2O3) and plutonium dioxide (PuO2) have been measured using inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPS) in the isochromat mode (9.7 eV). Ultraviolet Photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) at four different photon energies between 11 and 41 eV are also reported to support the interpretation of the IPS data. The band gap energies of the oxides have been determined from the combination of UPS and IPS spectra; the photoelectric work function was established from the UPS data for the metal and oxides and information from the UPS and IPS spectra have been used to aid interpretation of the core level Pu 4f XPS data.
