Abstract

AbstractIntrusion detection systems (IDS) are gaining more attention in the popular press due to the increased attention given to virus and worm attacks that affect a large part of the Internet. Yet, the number of books and papers written about IDS is very small compared to the security, cryptology and hacker books. ROBERT BRUEN attempts to provide a background and one approach to IDS that goes full circle. He does not address policy, nor is this paper a product review. Most of the software mentioned is free and is provided as examples of a particular concept. Naturally there are many good commercial products available. While the field of IDS has been around for several decades, there is still much room for growth. This is not intended as a criticism of researchers or vendors, only an acknowledgment of the difficulties involved. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
