Abstract
Abstract The 1970s have closed and the '80s opened in rotten fashion. The deaths of Georges Haupt, Herbert Marcuse, Peter Ludz, Hans Gerth and Nicos Poulantzas have not helped matters. Now the passing of Rudi Dutschke has made them worse. Activist-intellectual, he embodied the best of the New Left, including its best contradictions. Although he had no direct links to Telos, our own hopes are much diminished by his death. Many of the themes in his Versuch, Lenin auf die Füsse zu Stellen (1974), a wide-ranging and vigorous analysis of the Russian Revolution, Lenin and Lukacs, are part of what we can modestly call a common project.
