Abstract

Anthropologists often "reinvent the wheel" by grappling with concepts that have long pedigrees within the history of philosophy. The degree to which anthropological theory building is conscious and credited varies, of course, not the least by educational and cultural backgrounds. This journal issue features current struggles and debates within Russian anthropology and linguistics over the intellectual divides of materialism and positivism versus phenomenology and relativism.
