Ahlberg is a historian and the Assistant to the General Editor in the Office of the Historian, U.S. Department of State. She received a Ph.D. in diplomatic history from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2003. Ahlberg is the author of Transplanting the Great Society: Lyndon Johnson and Food for Peace (Columbia, MO: University of Missouri Press, 2008), which won the Society for History in the Federal Government's 2010 George Pendleton Prize. Her articles have appeared in Diplomatic History, Great Plains Quarterly, the American Historical Association's Perspectives on History, and The Public Historian. Ahlberg is a member of the editorial board of The Public Historian.
