AbstractThis chapter addresses the past (and, to an extent, present) relative invisibility of linguistics in civil law procedures, despite the fact that linguistics is the field that specializes in how language works and is used. The book is written for lawyers, so that they can learn to appreciate what linguistic analysis can do for them. The book is also for linguists, who may not be widely aware of the opportunity to analyze language in law cases, and for students in both law and linguistics. The book contains eighteen actual case studies of the ways that virtually every type of linguistic procedure, including phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, speech acts, pragmatics, and discourse analysis, can be effectively used in civil cases.
