Abstract

In this chapter, we shall review a list of quality standards that have been introduced by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) based in Geneva, Switzerland. These quality standards are almost universally accepted. We shall review the origins of ISO and why its quality standards (ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 series) have gained such international recognition. We also discuss these quality standards as to their intents and how they can help organizations become more competitive. The discussions here are introductory and fundamentally basic. The aim is to expose the reader to perhaps the most influential quality standards. There are several books written on these standards and the interested reader can get more detailed information by resorting to such sources.
