Abstract
Overview of GIUKU—a set of tools to facilitate communication with, and operation of, data base systems. GIUKU addresses the needs of knowledgeable users and thus supports the exploratory programming involved in developing new kinds of scientific and technical applications. GIUKU integrates three kinds of subsystems, supporting: data base manipulation, programming and operation of GIUKU itself. All GIUKU facilities rely on graphical direct-manipulation interfacing capabilities. Following a summary of their design principles, a guided tour is conducted through the GIUKU facilities, as seen from the user's perspective. Each major functionality is described emphasizing its novel features and documented with a screen snapshot. A comparison to related work, a critical discussion of the present implementation (a complete prototype available for use) and a sketch of plans for the future conclude this introduction to GIUKU.
