Abstract

The introduction firstly explains the institutional context in which the research volume was collaboratively produced, i.e., the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” at Freie Universität Berlin. Secondly, it emphasizes the urgent need to acknowledge and seriously study the diversity of epistemologies cultivated in/with the performing arts across the world today. Thirdly, the text introduces briefly existing methods of working across and through epistemological divides in the arts as well as in scholarship, with a particular focus on main research areas of Theater and Performance Studies, namely theater historiography, performance analysis and critical theory. Lastly, the introduction provides an overview of the chapters included in Interweaving Epistemologies.
