Abstract

In modern day culture boredom can be seen as a common and usually dysfunctional mood with considerable consequences for physical and psychological health. Therefore it is relevant to assess this particular mood for research and clinical purposes. Based on the Boredom Proneness Scale – an instrument that measures boredom multidimensionally – the Dutch Language Scale for Boredom Proneness (Nederlandstalige Schaal voor Gevoeligheid voor Verveling; NSGV) was constructed. This scale was tested in a sample of 789 respondents. Based on a principal components analysis, seven dimensions can be distinguished: Listlessness, Drag Out Experience of Time, Depletion, Lack of Concentration, Restlessness, Experience Seeking and Lack of Interest. Estimates of the internal consistency (Cronbachs alpha) ranged from .63 to .93. All seven dimensions and the total NSGV correlated in a differentiating way with other relevant aspects of personal functioning and health, thereby indicating evidence for the validity of the NSGV.
