Abstract
This is the introductory chapter of the book Holy Nations and Global Identities: Civil Religion, Nationalism, and Globalisation , which aims to provide insights from historians, political scientists, sociologists and sociologists of religion. The book is divided into three parts: (1) Civil Religion and Nationalism, which concentrates on theoretical questions in study of civil religion and nationalism, focusing on relationship between the two and how further research may be developed; (2) Civil Religion in Nation-States, which presents new case studies of civil religion in nation-states today, challenged as they are by migration and globalisation; and (3) Civil Religion in a Global Era, which analyses these challenges of globalisation and provides original cross-cultural analyses and examples.
