Abstract
Data were collected from 63 subjects before they left school and from a control group of 28 students on arrival a t university. Second-year data were collected from 43 of the subjects in colleges or centres and from 22 of the controls in the university. Height and weight were also measured . A t r a n s p a r e n t gr id (1.2 x 0.8 m) divided into 1 cm x 1 cm squares was laid over each paper walkway after removal from the site of use and the co-ordinates of the paint pad marks were recorded. Co-ordinates and walk time were entered into a specifically designed computer programme (Rafferty and Bell, 1995). Step length, stride length, base width, foot angle, cadence and velocity were calculated by the programme.
