Abstract

This paper describes the preliminary experimental results obtained from destructive cyclic tests on masonry arches strengthened with FRCM (Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) strengthening system applied onto the arch intrados. The scaled models of the arches used in the tests, reproduce the geometry of the high span ratio bridges typically found in the Italian railway lines. They were tested with a non-symmetrical vertical load that involves a collapse mechanism with 4-hinges similar to the typical seismic collapse mechanism of masonry arches. The experimental campaign made it possible to assess the increase in the arch resistance with the FRCM strengthening system, to simulate the load-displacements curve and to analyze the collapse mechanism of the unstrengthened and strengthened specimens.
