Abstract

Palicourea marcgravii is considered the most important toxic plant that causes sudden death in cattle in Brazil, due to its extensive national distribution, high toxicity, good palatability and cumulative effect, being responsible for deaths and economic losses in Brazilian livestock every year. Its active toxic principle is monofluoroacetic acid which inhibits the Krebs cycle, interrupting the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. There´s not treatment for the poisoning due to its superacute progression, and prevention is based on the construction of fences around forested areas, cutting access to the plants.
