Abstract
The year 1895 saw a multitude of crucial inventions worldwide, one of which was the cinema. Within a few years it had become the basis of a major entertainment industry, though documentary films occasionally seemed relevant to academic ethnography too. This article explores the interplay between the film industry, ethnography, and world events.
