Abstract
My name is Julia Takuno Hespanhol. I am originally from the city of São Paulo, Brazil. I am about to begin the second year of my master's degree in microbiology at the Instituto of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo. My goal is to characterize antibacterial effectors secreted by the T6SS (type VI secretion system) of Salmonella spp. and identify their enzymatic activity and cell targets. My advisor is Prof. Ethel Bayer Santos, who is very driven and supportive to her students. We showed that the SPI-22 (Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 22) T6SS of Salmonella bongori has antibacterial activity. We then described the antibacterial effectors TseVs (Type VI effectors with VRR-Nuc domain), which are structure-specific nucleases that induce dsDNA breaks, as revealed by in vivo and in vitro experiments. The study of how bacteria kill each other is an interesting and broad field that could potentially yield solutions to antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics. After I finish my Master's, I intend to continue my academic career by doing a Ph.D. in microbial interactions, either studying the T6SS or other mechanisms of antagonism.
