Abstract

Hartman: I'm not sure that I complain about it. I show that there is a difference of traditions, that in the case of Anglo-American criticism or style of thought as it has developed through the academy, there is a greater emphasis on a certain kind of pedagogical decorum. Whereas in Europe, although that is a large generalization, there seems to be more flexibility in terms of audience or style of thought. Clearly, there is a university style in Europe, too, in German, Swiss, and French universities. A pedagogical style, expository, introductory, and so forth, but there is also another level, which in England and the States would come out as journalistic or free lance. Although it might be tied to academic issues, there is in Europe a greater freedom of style, orders of discourse, let's say.
