Abstract

Diversity may occur among institutions that are considered to be similar. This is one of the arguments developed in this paper through the empirical analysis of faculty recruitments in history and mathematics within German and French universities. This study shows that the definition of what constitutes a 'good candidate' varies greatly from one department to another and affects the criteria to be taken into account and their respective weight in the decision. These variations are to be explained by the internal dynamics of the particular national academic labour market, the specific situation of the department and also by its development strategy.
