Abstract

Objective To study and evaluate the technique feasibility, safety and curative effect of the interventional radiological techniques through transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS) route for management of portal venous system thrombosis. Methods Thirteen patients with portal venous thrombosis and portal hypertension were treated using interventional radiological techniques through TIPS avenue. There were 8 cases with complete occlusion of portal vein trunk and 5 cases with incomplete thrombosis. Results Twelve cases of patients were successfully procedured using interventional radiological techniques through TIPS avenue and 1 patient failed. The successful rate was about 92.3%.The mean portal vein pressure reduced from 42 cm H2O to 24 cm H2O with average 18 cm H2O reduction.Ascites decreased, bleeding stopped and the clinical symptoms disappeared. Conclusions The interventional radiological techniques through TIPS avenue for management of portal venous thrombosis is minimally-invasive,significantly effective and safe,it might be a treatment option in certain patients whose clinical symptoms can not be controlled by medical conservative treatment, and has no surgery indication too. Key words: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) ; Interventional therapy; Portal venous system thrombosis
