Abstract

This article aims at approaching to the concept of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) and their possible links to Social Work. There exist scientific evidences of the multiples benefits derived from the human-animal interactions. Take advantage of these benefits and of the bond created with animals so as to promote the health and well-being of people lead to the AAI. This article addresses definitions, classification and theoretical framework of the AAI through a brief description of their origins, the empirical evidences found, and the international agencies involved into the research of the animal bond and its application to human therapies. The current situation, even with some deficiencies, shows the AAI as a valid field of intervention for different professions related to the attention of people and collectives in vulnerability situation or social exclusion.
