Ferlet, R. ; Laurent, C. ; Vidal-Madjar, A. ; York, D. G. Abstract Observations of interstellar nitrogen absorption features in the spectrum of the star Gamma Cas with the Copernicus satellite were performed. Because of the large range in f-values for the lines observed, it is possible to accurately determine the structure of the line of sight. Four components at LSR velocities are found around minus 24.6 km/s (component A), minus 17.1 km/s (component B), minus 7.8 km/s (component C), and plus 1.3 km/s (component D). Through the comparison with H I absorption lines and ground-based observations, it is shown that the main component (B), which contains about 97 percent of the total nitrogen column density, is warm (T about 12,000 K). It is also demonstrated that N I is, on average, not depleted on the line of sight.
