Abstract

Six interspecific hybrids of Ipomoea Pes-caprae (L.) Sweet ssp. brasiliensis (L.) van Ooststr. and I. crassicaulis (Benth.) B. L. Robinson were obtained with the former as the female parent. The reciprocal cross was unsuccessful. The hybrids were morphologically variable, but all were intermediate to the parent species. A somatic chromosome number of 2n = 30 was found for the parent species and the hybrids. Chromosome pairing at metaphase I of pollen mother cells was normal in the parents, which formed 15 bivalents in all cells. A maximum of nine bivalents per cell was observed in the hybrids, and many cells exhibited no pairing. All hybrids were sterile.
